The
Bridgetown Walking Group is a group of about 15 - 35 people who
meet regularly on Thursday mornings for a walk in local places of
interest, usually bushland or recognised walking trails, enjoying
any natural flora and fauna that may be evident.
The
format is very informal, with no obligation to attend and no official
structure. Whilst care is taken to find suitable locations, walkers
are encouraged to be responsible for their own welfare, determining
their own level of involvement (distance and whether they amble
or walk fast), ensuring they are aware of the destination before
leaving the car park. Prior research and suggestions regarding venues
is encouraged, and each week the destination for the following week
is discussed and determined. Visitors are always welcome.
The
morning usually consists of a walk for about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending
on capacity of the individuals, and ending with a social morning
tea. On the LAST Thursday of the month we may venture further to
places of interest, taking lunch with us. For example, Northcliffe
Sculpture Park, Beedelup Falls and Big Brook Dam near Pemberton.
The
group meets at the Railway Station car park in Bridgetown (please
park to the south end near the caravan parking area). Car pooling
is customary, particularly for longer trips.
Contribution
for morning tea is $2.00 per head; cups, tea, coffee, etc. are all
supplied, but if you feel like bringing a thermos of hot water and/or
your seat, this is appreciated.
HISTORY
Alison
Wheatley says she started the Walking group about the year 2000,
whilst working as a physiotherapist at Bridgetown Hospital. She
saw a need for people to get together for a walk to improve their
fitness, strengthen muscles and socialise, thereby looking after
each other on the walks and providing moral support. On the first
couple of walks they finished up with morning tea at what is now
the Emporium Bistro. The group was well supported and she was pleased
when members of the group took over running the group, which was
the original aim.
She
is very happy to see the group still running and appreciates the
work of the people who are making it happen today.
Winter
starting time is 9.00am. From the first weekend in November the
summer starting time is 8.30am.
